WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Railway Supply Institute (RSI) is closely monitoring the recently announced proposed combination of Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. This transaction, which would create the nation’s first transcontinental freight railroad company, is now subject to review by the Surface Transportation Board (STB).
RSI members have an interest in the long-term health and stability of the rail industry and its supply chain. “We have full confidence in the Surface Transportation Board’s evaluation of the potential impacts of this merger,” said RSI President Jim Riley. “Our industry’s success is tied to a reliable freight rail network that is the preferred modal transportation choice of shippers, and we will continue to monitor the proceedings.”
