Statement on the Passing of RSI Board Member, Dan O'Neal

by Tom Simpson, RSI President

The Railway Supply Institute (RSI) would like to express condolences to the family of Dan O'Neal who passed away on October 10, 2017 in his home at the age of 81. Dan was a member of the RSI Board of Directors for the last four years representing the Greenbrier Companies. This year, he served as RSI's Secretary-Treasurer and was slated to become Vice Chairman next year.  Long before Dan served on the Board, he was active on the RSI Equipment Leasing Committee and often participated in RSI Washington, DC fly-ins. His was a strong voice in the big truck fight.
Dan served his country by joining the Navy and then served as Transportation Counsel to the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee. In 1973 President Richard Nixon appointed Dan as a commissioner of the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) including a stint as Chairman from 1977 - 1980. A picture of Dan with his fellow Commissioners from that era hangs proudly in the Surface Transportation Board boardroom, the organization that replaced the ICC.
Dan's counsel, friendship and warm smile will be missed. Our condolences go to his wife Diane and the entire Greenbrier family. Rest in Peace, Dan.
