Simpson Celebrates 25 Years at RSI
Washington, DC – January 24, 2013. On January 18, President Thomas D. Simpson celebrated 25 years with the Railway Supply Institute and its predecessor organizations. Simpson was hired as Vice President of the merged Railway Progress Institute in 1988 and has remained an ardent supporter of the railway supply industry ever since.
Simpson became Executive Director of the newly merged Railway Supply Institute in 2003. His leadership and confidence during that time helped guide a smooth merger of the Railway Supply Association and the Railway Progress Institute. In 2010, Simpson was named President of RSI.
While shy about his accomplishments, Simpson helped navigate the association through the economic downturn of the rail supply industry during the recent recession and kept the organization on track. Throughout the 90s and today, Simpson has remained a champion of grade crossing safety through his tireless work with Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI), a nationwide volunteer organization dedicated to reducing crashes at highway rail grade crossings and trespasser fatalities.
Believing it to be the best path forward for future trade shows, he played a pivotal role in the success of Railway Interchange, an odd year joint trade show and conference sponsored by RSI, the Coordinated Mechanical Associations, Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association (REMSA), Railway Systems Suppliers, Inc. (RSSI), and American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA). Railway Interchange is the largest railway supply trade show in the United States and in 2011 brought in nearly 9,000 attendees.
Simpson also served as Chair of the E.H. Harriman Memorial Awards Institute until 2012. The Harriman Awards Institute was founded in 1913 by the late Mrs. Mary W. Harriman to honor her husband and to recognize railroads for their outstanding safety record.
“Tom has been a steady leader for RSI no matter what the business cycle in our supply industry, and a consistent force for change and progress as the supply industry brings new technologies and efficiencies to our North American rail industry,” said Fred Sasser, RSI Chair and CEO of Chicago Freight Car Leasing.
