Grade Crossing Safety

Chairman — Fran Welsh
General Manager, Railroad Sales & Service
Safetran Systems Corporations

Safety is one of the most critical issues facing the rail industry. Since the majority of accidents take place at highway-rail grade crossings, our lawmakers have responded by providing dedicated federal funding to install warning devices and making other safety improvements at grade crossings.

RSI's committee on grade crossing safety is comprised of representatives from member companies that manufacture grade crossing warning devices, surfaces and other components. This committee works closely with state officials and appropriate railroad authorities in maximizing the benefits of SAFETEA-LU's Section 130 Grade Crossing Program. Committee members travel the country each year to interact with state and federal officials on this important program, and monitor the expenditure of this funding to ensure that the funds are being used in the most efficient manner. In addition, the committee engages in rail policy development, with particular emphasis on the Section 130 program. Finally, the committee works very closely with Operation Lifesaver to reduce the deaths and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and along railroad rights-of-way through education programs for the public.

Next meeting of Grade Crossing Safety Committee

To be announced.
