About the Railway Supply Industry

The nation's freight railroads carry more than one-third of all intercity ton-miles of freight. Commuter rail and passenger traffic use these tracks as well, except for the tracks in the Northeast Corridor, which are owned by Amtrak.

Railroads rely on suppliers to provide equipment, supplies, services, and the research and development required to help improve railroad safety and productivity.

Facts about the Railway Supply Industry:

  • Railway supply companies sell more than $20 billion annually in equipment, supplies and services to the nation's rail systems. Twenty-five percent is sales to passenger railroads.
  • The industry employs more than 150,000 people in more than 500 companies throughout the United States, ranging in size from major corporations to individual entrepreneurs.
  • Of the 1.4 million freight cars that exist today, RSI members own, operate, or manage 500,000 freight cars, or thirty-six percent of all freight cars on the rails today. This number includes privately owned tank cars (67 percent of the tank car fleet).
  • Suppliers have built and delivered 543,612 freight cars and 7,498 locomotives to the railroads from 1991 to 2001.
  • Since 1991, the U.S. railroads’ capital investment has exceeded $70 billion.
